Matthew 5:43-45 ESV
You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
Jesus challenges us to love not only those who love us but also those who oppose, mistreat, or hurt us. This kind of love goes beyond human instinct and reflects the very character of our Heavenly Father, who extends His goodness and grace to both the righteous and unrighteous. Loving our enemies doesn't mean approving of their actions; it means choosing grace over resentment, forgiveness over bitterness, and prayer over retaliation. Our love for others should not be determined by how they treat us, but by how God has loved us. When we love in this way, we become a visible reflection of Christ in a divided world.
